The unique aspect of Dusshera in Varanasi is Bharat Milap, which is celebrated to commemorate Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his reunion with his brother, Bharat. The tradition of world famous Bharat Milap of Nati Imli in Varanasi is 476 years old.  Bharat Milap festival is held the day following Dussehra in Varanasi. The people of Varanasi celebrate Bharat Milap with great fanfare and devotion. Thousands gather in the streets to see the procession of Lord Ram and his reunion with younger brother, Bharat. People pay their respect by putting Tilak on forehead and garlanding Lord Ram and his brothers.

The festival typically involves locals dressing up to play the main cast of characters in Bharat Milap—Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Bharat. Anticipation runs high on the day. The actors, chosen to enact the milaap, are carried onto the streets of Nati Imli in a procession that begins around 4.30 p.m. and runs for two hours. Watched by thousands of ardent devotees, it is a glorious collision of religion and spectacle that never disappoints.

For locals who have thronged here for centuries, the Bharat Milap or Ramlila is an embodiment of the religious text ‘Ramayana’ and they enjoy the performance with fervor that is both religious and festive. . Another interesting part of the Bharat Milap celebration is the presence of Kashi Naresh (former king of Varanasi) with all his royal paraphernalia and regal finery.
